Have you noticed the influx of babies being born in this decade? There seem to be a lot of babies recently born to family, to friends, and there is always news of another celebrity baby. Which raises the question of what is the safest water to use, with formula, for your infant? Having researched many of the contaminants in the water, especially the water in Des Moines, Iowa, I have found that in most instances, the recommendation for infant water is purified bottled water. Spring water is generally not recommended for infants on formula. Spring water contains minerals and when mixed with formula could lead to mineral overdose. Purified water or distilled water is recommended for infant formula feeding.
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), over 300 contaminants can be found in the U.S. tap water. More than half of the chemicals detected are not subject to health or safety regulations and can legally be present in any amount. The federal government does have health guidelines for others, but 49 of these contaminants have been found in one place or another at levels above those guidelines, polluting the tap water for 53.6 million Americans. The government has not set a single new drinking water standard since 2001.
According to the Mayo Clinic’s hospital website, the American Dental Association does not recommend mixing formula with fluoridated tap water; it can create enamel fluorosis, which develops while teeth are forming in the gums. This can leave white spots or stripes on permanent teeth. Their recommendation is to use purified or distilled water.
