Warning Labels on Sugary Drinks: The Truth About Sugar

You may have heard about California’s plan to require a warning label on sugary drinks that contain more than 75 calories for every 12ozs. For reference, that is the typically size of a child’s drink at a restaurant. What is this label exactly? It is a warning label that says something to the effect of the following: consuming beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. How can they claim this? Well there have been many studies that have shown that having just one soda pop a day increases an adult’s likelihood of being overweight by around 27% and increases a child’s likelihood of being overweight by 55%. Keep in mind that these numbers are for just one soda pop a day. Individuals that consume more than one soda pop a day are at an even higher risk for being overweight. A soda pop or two a day increase a person’s risk of type-2 diabetes by 26%.

The label was developed by a panel of nutrition experts that are concerned for the future of America’s health. This is because if trends in sugar consumption continue, it is predicted that one out of every three children born in the U.S. after 2000 will develop type-2 diabetes. The numbers are even higher for Latino and African-American children as nearly 50% of them will develop type-2 diabetes if they don’t control their sugar intake.
Though soda pop comes to mind as containing the most sugar it is also found in these drinks: energy drinks, fruit juices, vitamin waters, sports drinks, sweetened tea, specialty coffee drinks, smoothies and more. Even though these sugary beverages are tasty, they are full of empty calories and are actually dehydrating your body. Keeping hydrated is important to maintaining a healthy body by keeping your cells hydrated, eliminating toxins and staying energized.

By taking the sugary beverages out of your diet and replacing them with water you will not only decrease your chances of becoming overweight but also reaping all of the benefits of drinking water.

Though the idea of drinking water in place of your sugary beverage might not sound very good there are easy ways to make the transition to drinking more water every day. We have some easy options for adding more water to your life. These suggestions can help you increase your water intake, decrease your sugar intake and be on your way to a healthier you.

  • Replace on sugary beverage every day with a water
  • Start drinking unsweetened tea or black coffee in place of sweet tea or sugary espresso drink, even coffee with added sugar and cream
  • Carry a water bottle with you everywhere you go, you’ll be amazed by how much more water you drink simply by having it there with you
  • Make it a goal to drink at least 64 oz of water a day
  • Put a water cooler in your home and/or office, cool purified water that taste great will help you to want to drink more water ( We would be happy to help you with this!)
  • Add lemon, lime, orange or cucumber to your water to add a slight flavor, this can be very refreshing and make drinking water more enjoyable without increasing your sugar intake.
